  • When the Bohemian composer Bohuslav Martinů wrote his Double Concerto, Europe was going through troubled times and the bitter anticipation of something terrible: the beginning of World War II. This feeling can still be heard in a piece that is almost permanently under tension and has become the pinnacle of his musical production. The inevitability of fate is one of the characteristic ideas of Romanticism that dominated the writing of Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony. The work is enveloped in mysteries that remain to be unveiled, and continues to surprise us by its trajectory from solemnity and sadness to apotheosis.
