  • Tchaikovsky became particularly famous for his ability to tell stories through music, often using ideas associated with characters and feelings. Written in 1885, the Manfred Symphony originated from a suggestion made by Balakirev: all movements should have a fixed musical idea associated with Manfred, the protagonist of Lord Byron’s gothic poem filled with supernatural elements. Musicologist Ana Liberal explores this complex symphony and the narrative that was the basis for it in another commented concert for families.
